MODERN KAIDAN ROMANCE - SHORTCUT

MAIN CAST

EXORCISTS & Allies

SAGYO JUNNA

Our protagonist, an exorcist that communes with ghosts instead of sending them off by force. Could also be called a nercormancer. Age 23, likes traditional Japanese style but personality and views are very modern & unorthodox. Not well liked in supernatural community due to "dark" powers. Good-humored despite being gloomy and sarcastic. Can't leave people in trouble. "Junna" means "martyr" -- although they avoid their problems, they don't like others to be involved either, at the risk of them getting hurt.

ISSHIKI IBUKI [ALIVE]

Junna's girlfriend, before she died. She was a lively, curious sort and set to be the next head of her family. Because the Isshiki family technique involves creating familiars out of the bodies of dead animals, they are very polarizing in the supernatural community, though many admire them for their charitable and righteous nature. Ibuki tragically committed suicide after her family was slaughtered by powerful curses.

ISSHIKI IBUKI [DEAD]

Junna attempted to resurrect Ibuki with a ritual of their own making, but it is not possible to bring someone back from the dead without repurcussions. As a vengeful ghost, Ibuki haunts Junna, trying to exact revenge for the suffering she was put through by being brough back to the world of the living. At the start of the story, Junna has been running for two years and Ibuki has not stopped chasing them.

NUAN

A powerful immortal alchemist hailing from the Shaanxi provine in China, they have lived more than 3000 years. They traveled to Japan in search of their missing spirit weapons (which were made with the souls of their deceased friends). While they appear calm and serene on the outside, they can be easily flustered because they don't get chances to interact deeply with humans often. They accidentally influenced the depiction of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, in Shaanxi many, many, many years ago, so some statues of her resemble them and the depiction spread. It is still a popular belief in the supernatural community t hat Nuan IS Guanyin.

HACHIKUJI NANA

Junna's best friend from childhood, a shrine maiden at Benihime Inari Shrine. Her family has a long history of dealing with the supernatural on both sides. She is the oldest sister, so she has had a hand in taking care of her younger siblings since her parents died. A warm and kind person, but very anxious and prone to stuttering.

Hachikuji Shigoro

The middle Hachikuji sibling, two years younger than Nana. His secret is that he is actually Benihime's half sister (different father from his human sisters) and has fox spirit powers, although he doesn't tell anyone this until later in the story (and at first, only Junna). Sneaky with a mischievous streak; he basically acts as Takuto's sidekick, and the pair of them charge high prices for exorcisms (his SECOND secret is that he's in love with Takuto, and the lengths he does to in attempt to pursue Takuto without revealing his true self are ridiculous).

Hachikuji Hifumi

The youngest Hachikuji, a first year junior high student. She is autistic, possibly the cause of her strange habits (almost nonverbal, stares when not speaking, sensitivity to loud noise and strong tastes/smells). She is able to see ghosts, but not do anything about them... yet. At the start of the school year, she was being bullied by her classmates, who forced her to look at a cursed website they visited, causing ALL of them to be cursed. Since then, she has been trying to find a way to remove the curse on her own as her classmates gradually go missing. She opens up to Junna about it later.

Doikawa Touko

Junna's old mentor, head of Doikawa Shrine, which houses the mysterious "Doikawa-sama," a god of unknown power and origin. She is related to the famous sorcerer Abe-no-Seimei. Despite her serious nad stern appearance, she has a caring side. Junna still remembers her being strict and thus takes a while to open up to Doikawa and listen to her advice.

TAKUTO

The oldest of the Takara triplets, friends of Junna and the Hachikujis since childhood. Takuto is motivated only by money and power, and so works with only Shigoro as an exorcist. He has a cruel streak and insults Junna almost every time they meet (although supposedly, he is not good at thinking up insults himself and gets them from Shigoro).

TAKARA HARUTO

The middle Takara triplet, he is polite and kind-hearted. He acts as a mortician and grief counselor for people who's friends and relatives have been killed by the supernatural. Junna likes him because he works close to death, like they do.

TAKARA TASUKU

The youngest triplet, he works with Nana at the shrine. Friendly and energetic. Sometimes he seems dense, but he is very intelligent. Now that they're older, Junna has a higher tolerance for his excitable nature, but they don't spend much time together.

KAJIYASHIKI KEI

God-father of the Hachikuji siblings, Hifumi still lives with him. He was a good friend of their father before the Hachikuji parents were killed by a monster. Usually laid-back and relaxed, being surrounded by friends heavily involved with the supernatural is fraying his nerves recently. He wants to be a good parent-figure to Hifumi. Although he can see the supernatural, his powers aren't strong so he mostly focuses on internet research.

BENIHIME

The fox spirit who lives at the shrine Nana works at. Friendly and a bit of a prankster, like most foxes.

IZANAMI

Rules over the Shinto underworld, Yomi, where she is trapped for eternity. Junna has won her favor.

NANAMI MINAMI

One of the two shikigami that Ibuki created, she is a host on the cursed late night variety show, Itsumademo MIDNIGHT SESSION. She and her cohost use the show to capture humans and kill them for their souls. She pretends to be an idol singer, but her cutesy act hides her vicious nature. She was created with a human body and a seagull spirit.

RYUUZAKI KENGO

The second host of Itsumise, a loud-mouthed radioshow host who moved to TV. Fast-talking and sleazy looking. He was created with a human body and lizard spirit.
